Balancing Business & Big Kids Without Burning Out
When I first started my business, I was juggling school runs, packing lunch boxes, navigating sibling squabbles, and still trying to show up online with purpose and passion. Sound familiar? Building an online empire while raising a family isn’t about finding perfect balance—it’s about creating alignment between your vision, your values, and your responsibilities at home.
If you’re a mum with big goals and kids who are growing more independent (but still need you for all the things), this is your reminder: you can grow a business that thrives—without missing the moments that matter most.
1. Ditch the Hustle: Build in Harmony
You don’t have to choose between ambition and presence. And you definitely don’t have to burn out to build something successful. The key is harmony—not balance.
Instead of overloading your schedule, focus on building a business that complements your life. For me, that means working school hours (9–2), planning for flexibility during sports days or sick days, and allowing my business to grow in alignment with my energy and values.
💡 Try this: Choose 3 weekly power priorities—one for business, one for family, and one for YOU. That’s the CEO-mum version of goal setting.
2. Time Blocks Over To-Do Lists
Forget trying to tick off 27 things in a day. Working mums win when we work in focused, intentional blocks. My workday is built around school hours, and I don’t waste energy “multi-tasking.” I theme my days and batch my tasks.
My daily rhythm might look like this:
Monday – Create content
Tuesday – Client calls / Admin
Wednesday – Funnel or product work
Thursday – Marketing & visibility
Friday – CEO planning + personal development
I also keep a “brain dump” list where I offload ideas or reminders that aren’t urgent. It helps keep me focused and present.
3. Automate, Systemise, and Simplify
Running a business solo doesn’t mean doing everything manually. In fact, if you want to keep your evenings and weekends for family time, automation is your best friend.
Some of my favourite tools:
AutomateWoo – Sends personalised emails or reminders automatically
MailPoet – Handles email marketing right from my WordPress site
Google Drive – Where I store all my business systems and templates (organised and colour-coded, of course)
Even small things like using a meal planner, setting recurring grocery orders, or creating a “family calendar” can streamline your home life and free up brain space.
4. Done Is Better Than Perfect
There will be weeks when you skip the gym, miss an email, or order pizza (again). Guess what? That doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you’re human.
Perfection is not the goal—progress and peace are.
Give yourself grace to build your empire imperfectly. Your kids don’t need a flawless mum. They need a present one. One who is modelling courage, consistency, and creativity.
5. Involve Your Kids in the Vision
One of the best decisions I made? I stopped trying to “hide” my business from my family. Now, I invite my boys into it. They see what I’m creating. They ask about my goals. They help pick product names or colours for my printables. They even remind me when it’s time to post something (future social media managers?).
You’re not just building a business—you’re modelling what it looks like to chase dreams, solve problems, and lead with purpose. That’s legacy.
